The impact of oral hygiene instruction on plaque control in orthodontic patients: a cross-sectional study

Objective: Deficient dental plaque control is common in adolescents, mainly among those wearing orthodonticapparatus. This study aimed to compare and oral hygiene habits adolescents with withoutfixed orthodontic appliances. Additionally, it was investigated whether personalized instruction(OHI) could be a predictor for reducing accumulation patients. Material andMethods: Sixty-nine patients, aged 12 20 years, were evaluated public organization which provides dentalcare. A questionnaire of applied, the number natural teeth teethwith visible biofilm obtained during clinical examination. comparative analysis sociodemographicand data performed, splitting this population into two groups: who used fixed orthodonticappliances (n=40) did not (n=29). Results: There no differences habitsamong groups. The Poisson regression showed that appliances 54% more likely tohave buildup compared not. Among individuals appliance,those had received OHI before or treatment 78% likelyto have greater bacterial instructed ones. Conclusion: Especiallyamong appliances, werealmost twice as accumulation.
